-Rivendell-

Also known as Imladris, and the Last Homely House before the wilds of the Misty Mountains and beyond, Rivendell is an ancient elf-haven known for its fire, song, good food, good company and warm welcome for the weary traveler.

Founded by Lord Elrond, Half-Elven, somewhere in the early days of either the Second or Third Age, Rivendell is a place of wisdom and peace; a seemingly timeless sanctuary hidden from the fast-changing face of Middle Earth.

Perhaps in part because of his mixed heritage, Elrond's house is by far the most open and welcoming of all the Elven realms remaining in Middle Earth during the tumultuous years of the Third Age. Here are welcomed men, elves and dwarves alike, so long as their hearts were true and their allegiance was not with the enemy.

Imladris also became a sort of record-house and museum, because many important and precious artifacts were given at one time or another, into the care and keeping of Lord Elrond and much of the history of Middle Earth dwelt in the intricately carved halls of Rivendell. Among these were the heirlooms of the house of Isildur, such as the broken shards of Elendil's sword Narsil and many other things of that nature.

Throughout all the years following the death of Isildur in the Gladden Fields, when the Royal House of Gondor became scattered and lost, Elrond's house was always open to receive them. All his long distant nephews and nieces were welcome in Rivendell and would find there both aid, comfort and peace when they needed it.

This tradition of generosity culminated when Elrond took into his house and his heart the young, human child Aragorn, after his father was killed. Last of the line of Kings, Aragorn was raised in Rivendell and it continued to be his home and refuge in all the long years of wandering and hardship that lay ahead of him.

Whether they are partaking of Lord Elrond's wisdom and council, or enjoying the stories and singing of the Elves in the Hall of Fire, or merely wandering in the fair woods, travelers to Rivendell usually find exactly what they are looking for in this pleasantly secluded haven.
